How to Make the Perfect Bed

Why should we make our beds in the morning? It’s a simple task, but it has many benefits.

Some people say it gives them a sense of accomplishment first thing in the morning, helping to start their day off on a good note. Some even say it can have a ripple effect on the rest of their day, leading to more good decisions and habits.

Making your bed in the morning can also help reduce stress. Rushing around to get ready in the morning can be stressful on its own. Pair that with the stress of a messy room (and unmade bed) and you’re already starting your day on a sour note. Plus, you’ll be met with the same stress when you get home at the end of a long day. Coming home to a neatly made bed is a welcome, relaxing sight that can offer comfort. It also encourages you to unwind after your day so you can rest and relax.

Still not convinced? Let’s look at it from a practical standpoint: making your bed can help keep your mattress and bedding clean and in good condition.

Start with a good mattress

To make the perfect bed, you need to start with the basic: a good mattress. You should be sleeping on a high-quality mattress that gives your body the proper support it needs. Sleeping on an old or lumpy mattress can lead to a host of problems, from everyday aches to chronic pain, and poor sleep.

Choose the right bedding (& take care of it)

Choosing cozy bedding is key to a bedroom sanctuary. High-quality bed sheets can help you instantly relax when you crawl into bed and also have a huge impact on the quality of your sleep overall.

Taking care of your sheets is an important part of making the perfect bed. The experts at Good Housekeeping recommend washing your sheets once a week in warm water, and an occasional hot-water wash for added disinfecting. This is especially important if you or a family member has been sick or there has been an accident in the sheets. (Hey, it happens!)

Once you have the perfect mattress and bedding, it’s time to make that bed. Follow these easy steps and you’ll be a pro in no time at all.

Step 1: The fitted sheet

Make sure the corners of the fitted sheet wrap completely around the corner of your mattress, reaching underneath so the weight of the mattress will help keep them in place. Easy peasy!

Step 2: The flat sheet

Lay your flat sheet on top of your fitted sheet with the finished side (the pretty side) face-down. This may sound odd, but it will add a picture-perfect layered look at the end!

Go for the "hospital corners!" This is nowhere near as hard as it sounds and this added 10-second step will help keep your sheets in place at night even with a little bit of tossing, turning and tugging in your sleep. A simple Google search will show you hundreds of online tutorials of how to get the perfect "hospital corners."

This way, not only will your ends look neat, but these extra steps will help keep them more firmly in place. Once you get good at it, it will probably takes less than a minute to do. Check out this tutorial video from Crane and Canopy  or this one from WikiHow to get your started.

Step 3: The duvet, comforter or quilt

Next, add your comforter or duvet.

Note: You may want to add a blanket between their flat sheet and comforter for use when nights aren’t as chilly (especially if you're a hot sleeper). If so, spread the blanket across your bed and tuck it, using those "hospital corners," just as you did for your flat sheet.

Then, lay your comforter on the bed and make sure it hangs evenly on all sides, although it shouldn't quite touch the top of your bed the way your flat sheet and blanket do. (We'll talk about why in the next section!)

Step 4: Layer like a pro

Roll down the top of your comforter and fold down the tops of your blanket and sheets to give your bed a stylish, layered look like the ones you see in hotels or in bedroom displays.

Hint: this is what we were talking about when we said don't pull your comforter all the way to the top of your bed! If it starts a little lower, an even amount of each layer will show when you fold them down! If your comforter is super thick, don't roll it down at all. Instead, pull it down a few more inches so you don't have to roll it and just fold your sheet over to add a layer.

If you want a tightly made bed, you can then tuck in the sides of your comforter or duvet under the mattress, but many people prefer the look of leaving it loose and it make crawling in to your luxurious, comfortable bed that much easier at night.

Step 5: Add accessories

Top off your beautiful bedding with some stylish finishing touches or opt for simplicity, (it's up to you!). It’s all about what brings you joy.

For a bit of accessorizing, choose European-size pillow shams that lean against your headboard (if you have one). Then, layer your favorite bed pillows.
