6 Affordable Ways to Refresh Your Bedroom Sanctuary

Life would be so boring if everyone was the same. The same can be said for your bedroom. You spend one-third of your life in bed (and even more in your bedroom), so it should be a sanctuary of rest and relaxation, with personal touches that make it unique and yours. If your bedroom is boring you, maybe it's time for a makeover.

Most people probably don't have thousands of dollars to fund bedroom makeovers every time they're bored with their bedroom setup. But that doesn’t mean you can’t refresh your space—there are many cost-effective ways to spruce up your room.

If painting is too big of a commitment, go simpler: try peel and stick wallpaper. There are dozens of colors and patterns available in stores and online. Simply peel and stick to apply. When you're ready to take it down or change it, just peel it off the wall. Prices range depending on the quality and type of wallpaper you choose, but overall, this is a fairly inexpensive way to make your space look high-end and fresh. Still sound too ambitious for you? Don’t do your whole room. Just add an interesting accent wall. Add a pop of color or pattern on the wall your bed lives on for a fun, new look.

2. Switch up your Artwork and Decor

What's hanging on your walls? Artwork and room decor can make a big impact when it comes to making your room more you. Consider adding some new pieces, either store-bought or crafted. Get some inexpensive frames to display family photos or shots from your most recent trip. Personal photos of fun memories or loved ones gives your room an organized, fresh feel.

When it comes to decor like pillows, throw blankets and candles, add some elements of “hygge,” a Danish word that describes the feeling of cozy intimacy. This can include things like a cozy blanket, candles and plants.

3. Adjust your Lighting

When the sun's out, make use of the natural light and open the curtains. On dreary days and at night, turn off your overhead light and turn on a lamp or two. The softer light will mimic natural sunlight and create the cozy atmosphere you want in a bedroom. You may even want to add some candles around the room to really boost your room’s hygge and make it the relaxing sanctuary you’ve been wanting.

It may not sound fun (and it’s probably been on your to-do list for years) but decluttering your bedroom can be just what your room needs to feel fresh. Not to mention, organizing your room can help you destress and get better rest. The sight (and smell) of clutter, whether it's piles of paperwork or unfolded laundry, is only going to raise your stress level. You want to feel calm when you wake up in the morning and get home at the end of a long day. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and work on decluttering your room to create a fresh, more restful space.

5. Freshen-up (Literally)

Let's be honest, is there anything better than climbing into a bed of crisp, clean, fresh-smelling sheets, pillows and blankets? Keeping your bed looking, smelling and feeling fresh is a great (inexpensive) way to instantly cozy-up your bedroom and make it feel new again.

Experts like Martha Stewart as well as doctors recommend washing your sheets at least once a week. This fight germs and bacteria and keeps your bed smelling and feeling fresh. Care for your bedding properly so that your bed is not only fresh and clean, but lives a long life.

Pro Tip: Martha Stewart says baking soda is the answer to freshening up almost anything. You can add ½-cup to any load of laundry to add extra-fresh scent to your bedding. You can also sprinkle it in drawers and on most types of furniture and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it up to breathe some new life into them. She even suggests leaving an open container of baking soda on one of the shelves in your closet to keep it smelling pleasant (just change it out every 30 days!).

6. Use Calming, Pleasant Scents

Use scents to get your bedroom smelling like a serene retreat. Essential oil diffusers are a great way to do this. Add water and few drops of your favorite scent for hours of diffusing. Diffuse peppermint and orange in the morning while you’re getting ready and lavender while you're getting ready for bed.
